Absolutely!
My theory (at least regarding my generation, and those who preceded mine) is that boys often gravitate toward basking in that celebration, respect, and admiration prior to reaching puberty.
Once puberty hits, homophobia begins to have a greater presence within the adolescent male psyche. Obviously, this isn't nearly as big of a stigma amongst queer boys and our straight allies during adolescence (since we have more acceptance toward those boys who are "different") -- but it's the fear of violence and ostracization from our male peers who basically begin signaling to us that they wish gay/bi/trans classmates would be shipped off to someplace else. :-(
