But the guilt and shaming became a prominent feature of White liberals, starting in the 1980s and 1990s and escalating from there.

Then, as you've pointed out, the Far Right proceeded to hijack it in the manner from which Ron DeSantis is currently trough-feeding.

The current connotation of "woke" is definitely unrecognizable from the reference as originally coined by Black Americans during the first half of the Twentieth Century. But let's not oversimplify things by pretending that White conservatives just spontaneously hijacked the term without any instigation from White liberals.
