"And if they won't pay attention to feedback from within their own demographic, they aren't likely to have much of a platform for very long and there is little point in arguing with them since they hold a view that is not widely espoused."
Unfortunately, our (so-called) "mainstream" media is run by a bunch of corporate shills who serve as its gatekeepers, and the loudest (and most garish) voices within activism movements (regardless of where along the ideological spectrum they fall) are often the ones who get the most attention.
As nice as it would be, members of the media, celebrities, and politicians aren't going to make our life easier or do our work for us. In a perfect world, the common sense that you articulate would be...well, common sense. Alas, as you've also pointed out: we live in an imperfect world. When people espousing any one type of worldview insist on controlling the entire narrative, room needs to be made for additional voices.
"Sort-of-okay" just simply isn't good enough, anymore.
