By "spousal support," I was referring to spouses' ability to make emergency decisions for the person to whom they're married, as well as their ability to merge incomes and file taxes jointly if they so choose. When two people who aren't recognized as legally married attempt to do this outside of a marriage, bureaucracies may force them to jump through multiple hoops depending on where they live.
