Dan Conner had a lot of toxic energy and outdated "values." They also leaned very heavily into the stereotype of Dan being the messier one who needed Roseanne to constantly nag him and remind him to clean up, be more involved with the kids, etc.

Steven Keaton (Michael Gross's character on "Family Ties") was very different from Dan; but part of what made the Keatons so unique from other sitcom families was that Steve and Elyse were ex-hippies, and their politics so often clashed with those of their children. So they were able to depict a functional family while still introducing plenty of conflict.
