Dave, they are most likely cloaking a lot of pain and heartache from their own lives. What you're seeing is how they are trying to give everybody a fair chance so they can determine who will turn out to be a true friend or ally to them. And that barometer won't necessarily be exactly the same for every individual trans person, either.
