Did you only visit California? I'd be curious to see your reactions if you visited someplace like Wisconsin (where I live) -- especially a rural area, and compare the two. When I first moved from rural Wisconsin to urban California, I felt minimal "culture shock" -- but, as a native European, perhaps the differences would be more stark from your perspective?
