Different styles of dreadlocks come from a variety of countries, not just African or Caribbean nations.
I certainly see why many Black people are offended or angry when White people (or other non-Black people) wear their hair in a style of dreadlocks that are distinctly African in origin. It's like saying "Haha, this looks cute" without bothering to learn the history and cultural background of the hairstyle itself. Trivializing the meaning of the hairstyle.
If more effort was put into learning about the origins of specific hairstyles, we'd be promoting a culture of giving accurate credit where credit is due.
I've never grown my hair long enough to wear dreadlocks...but if I did, I'd probably go with some Germanic braids (and educate myself about its history before styling my hair in that manner).
