Elizabeth, this is one of the best pieces I've read...not just on Medium, but on any editorial platform!

I fall into this category, as someone who is on the so-called "high-functioning" end of the autism spectrum. You're right...it's so hard to come up with an apt blanket descriptor for our extremely wide spectrum of conditions and experiences.

Is it a privilege? I guess, in the respect that society has forced us to TURN IT INTO ONE, it could be viewed that way. But why should our existences become so stigmatized that we feel forced to "hide it," in the first place?

When people question whether "we" (e.g., "passing" members of the disability community) are truly "oppressed" -- it only sets up an "Oppression Olympics"-style race-to-the-bottom between those with "mutable" versus supposedly "immutable" attributes.
