Excellent piece!
The rampant "jokes" about prison rape and closeted politicians (e.g. Lindsey Graham) need to be squashed.
On-balance, members of the LGBT community ultimately gain more by supporting each other...rather than by letting ourselves get divided. Obviously, there will always be differing lived experiences based on race, sex, gender, class, religion, political ideology, ableness, etc. within the Queer community -- these differences should be celebrated, in a quest for mutual understanding of one another.
There are bad eggs in every demographic group. Yes, there are odious Andrew Sullivans within the gay community. There are also odious Dan Savages, coming from the other end of the spectrum within the gay community. Nothing is ever true "all" or "most" of the time.
Since LGBT people want to be safe and feel included -- and such circumstances are so often denied to us -- we need to learn to lift each other up better. And we can do that without putting heterosexual people down.
