Except that "marketing" (or whatever we want to call it) is pivotal to communication. We may not like it, but that's a reality.

You mentioned personally pleading with Andrea Jenkins not to brand it as #DefundThePolice. Why was she so quick to dismiss you? Why were others in her activist circles so quick to jump onboard? Why were other activists outside of Minneapolis so rapidly coopting that terminology to advance their own local organizations?

Of course it's debilitating to have to repeat yourself over and over and over again when people are disregarding your testimony -- either by how they endlessly minimize it or gaslight us or ignore us altogether. This is true for ANY identity group that struggles with anything. You know what's also debilitating? -- watching the loudest voices in the room misrepresent an entire movement just so they can get attention...and, in the process, allowing extremists to corrupt the media narrative so that only the extremists themselves are the ones essentially given airtime to speak on anyone's behalf.

Let's take your example of the "White moderate" so often attributed to MLK. If somebody wants to make the case to me that a specific example (or pattern) of my centrism is hurting the cause, I'll listen. But it's still incumbent upon them to articulate what position I'm taking that is so harmful (and why it's harmful), and, more importantly, what's a better alternative I could be embracing. Obviously, I know it isn't solely relevant to me as an individual -- I'm using "you" and "me" in the generic sense, in that it could apply to any person who has more to learn (which is pretty much all of us / everybody!).

We can't just design a Choose-Your-Adventure-style handbook for every form of conflict/tension that arises, and then expect the entire world to magically read/absorb/obey it. That isn't feasible.
