I completely agree with your core point, speaking to what Ellen seemed to be saying. It's absolutely unnecessary and inane to expunge the word "woman" from our vernacular altogether -- as long as everyone is being mindful of ways in which to be inclusive and specific in language when discussing any pointed differences between the experiences of trans people and cis people.
