I agree that it's a choice for anyone to openly associate (label themselves) in accordance with a specific political party, or to participate in partisan activities publicly.

It is NOT a choice, however, to inherently believe in specific ideology. A socialist can't "will themselves" to believe in libertarianism. Just like a monotheist can't "will themselves" to believe in polytheism.
