I agree with everything you've said -- with the caveat that *if* he was yelling at her and/or escorting her into the car roughly, the group of women who intervened would have had reasonable grounds to be concerned for the woman's safety. If, on the other hand, he was calmly interacting with his girlfriend and speaking to her in a supportive and caring manner while simultaneously trying to get her into the car -- the women who were observing them probably would have been less panicked over his girlfriend's potential safety (or lack thereof)...and they would have been hard-pressed for a justifiable reason to intervene.
