I always thought the Jack-pretending-to-be-gay storyline was done to show how inane Mr. Roper's (and later, Mr. Furley's) machismo was. Janet, Chrissy, and Mrs. Roper always struck me as people who'd be totally supportive of gay friends in their lives.
