I do agree with you that most classic/mainstream conservatives aren't trying to outlaw birth control or same-sex marriage. I'm talking about the shrill (and, unfortunately, powerful) minority who control state legislatures.

On free speech, I see radical attempts at suppression from both the Far Left and the Far Right. It's generally people in the middle (even when they lean center/left or center/right) who are willing to have the more nuanced discussions.
