I don't subscribe to following tradition "just because it's tradition."

I'm fine with having traditions, but they must have either a benefit to them or be neutral.

Also, the concession speech Nixon gave to Kennedy was addressed to the American public as a whole, not to JFK individually. There's no evidence that Nixon phoned Kennedy, and I doubt it would have made much of a difference regarding Kennedy basking in the historic nature of his victory.
