I guess part of the challenge is placing in context "liberal" or "conservative" by whose standards?

Some people use liberalism vs. conservatism as those labels pertain to other countries (such as various European nations), because those are the standards to which they wish America would hold itself.

There's also the distinction between someone's ideology vs. their approach to implementing that ideology.
