I guess what I was getting at is tokenism.

People using Clarence Thomas as an avatar to say, "See, Black people disapprove of those Queers!" -- or using Ellen Pompeo as an avatar to say, "See, there's a White lady who knows how to use her privilege effectively, assertively, and persuasively!"

They'd be using one individual as a token to try to suggest representation (or modeling behavior) on behalf of "the group" as a whole.
