I knew it wasn't a solar flare or other interstellar phenomenon because, right away, I checked other mainstream websites -- and all of them seemed to be up and operational.

That's when I realized it seemed to be an outage limited to Facebook, which made me suspect it was a problem with their servers or some type of targeted hacking job.
