As someone who used to work in sitcoms, I can tell you they often use the canned laughter regardless. And fun fact: the recordings are from audiences in the 1950s. So chances are all the canned laughter we're hearing to prompt us to laugh is coming from dead people.

I knew they add the canned laughter to the actual reactions of the live studio audiences; but I didn't realize they hadn't updated the recorded laughter since the 1950s. Is it really that cost-prohibitive?
