I think the key is to teach better critical thinking skills so that young people don't just blindly accept religious text as is (especially literal interpretations of it). If we applied that rule-of-thumb, multiple religions along with nontheism could coexist more peacefully throughout the world.
If someone naturally believes in the likelihood of one deity or zero deities or multiple deities or they're simply content with NOT KNOWING -- that, in and of itself, is fine.
It's when people with power try to indoctrinate others into following their specific religious interpretations within the public sphere...that's where the government has a role to step in and say, "Nope. Your rights and privileges shouldn't be held hostage by someone else's faith-based beliefs, or lack thereof."
