I would argue that, just because "everyone does/says it" -- that doesn't mean everyone SHOULD keep doing/saying it.

When somebody tells me that something I've said (or the way I've worded something) has offended them, I listen and try to understand where they're coming from. How I adjust my wording, from that point forward, will depend on the context they provide for me.
