I would argue that there is a gap of philosophical thought between Critical Race Theorists who believe in the "rather than" contained within your cited statement...but then another group of CRT proponents who can get on board with the "in addition to" (in place of "rather than") interpretation.

At this point, it becomes a war between "either/or" versus "and/also."
