"If you are saying something extreme and it easily might be misconstrued then it is possible that a disclaimer might be needed."

The problem with this supposition is that a person who is saying something extreme may not define it as "extreme," themselves. So they may not be aware that they are triggering other people with their words. Especially if they have prejudices or biases that are clouding their communication style.

This is why I try to consciously provide context and nuance, whenever I write anything that requires some sort of generalization. Then, I can be less concerned about needing to put in a disclaimer.

That being said: I'm usually appreciative whenever I see disclaimers. If only because it tells me that the author cares about being heard clearly and accurately while connecting with their audience.
