If your first reaction to people talking about their negative experiences with another group of people is defense of the group, not the victim, I will question your moral compass.
I took this as her saying that observation of demographic trends common to members of a specific group doesn't automatically mean the observer is denigrating that group per se (unless they specify that they are). It could also be the observer jumping to the conclusion of gaslighting the victim rather than seriously listening to what the victim is sharing.
Of course, I don't want to put words into the author's mouth...so she can speak up and correct me if I'm wrong about her intent.
