I'm a pro-gun centrist (although not a gunowner, myself), but I agree with you (and a majority of other people) that background checks, licensing, training, red-flag laws, and quantity limits on gun purchases are reasonable gun control provisions.

With a lot of gunowners, I think it's the fear of a "slippery slope." How long before a federal gun registry would be used as a backhanded way to tax gunowners? Or impose a special excise tax on ammunition purchases? Or requiring all gunowners to carry liability insurance? These types of laws would be viewed, rightfully so, as a sly and not-so-subtle way to discourage gun ownership in the first place.

This is why I fear President Biden is wading into very dangerous political waters, talking about holding gun manufacturers potentially liable for crimes committed with guns they'd produced. This is in contrast to, say, gun manufacturers being held liable for defective products -- because in the latter case, the manufacturer is indeed directly responsible for the consumer's danger. But in the former scenario, allowing victims or their families to sue the gun manufacturer (rather than the perpetrator) for damages -- when it results from homicide or negligence -- only serves to, again, punitively discourage people from owning firearms altogether.
