I'm not proposing just "throwing money at it."

I oppose the concept of issuing $350,000 checks to any Black individual who can identify slaves in their family lineage. That would be socially catastrophic -- in addition to fiscally irresponsible, obviously.

When I talk about racial disparities in generational wealth, I'm referring to the effect of Jim Crow and other systemic obstacles that have historically placed Black and Brown households behind White households in terms of average earnings. The legacy of slavery has had a huge role in these inequities, even after the Civil War had ended.

The types of reparations I support would involve covering the costs of educational expenses, housing, job training, entrepreneurship, etc. for Americans who can trace their ancestry to chattel slavery. But it shouldn't be a blank check. There should be safeguards put in place to make sure those reparative resources are effective. And there should be a cap to it, in some form.
