It sounds like you were very fortunate to gain fulfillment out of your civil service experience. Also, Finland obviously has a totally different culture than the United States, from the get-go -- so that may have played a role in how enjoyable your tour of service was.

Out of curiosity: why does Finland restrict its Civil Service registry only to men? Why wouldn't it require that obligation from all persons across the board?
