Lorelai -- I think you're right that those few on the fringes are the actual minority, and not representative of feminists as a whole. However, because they are so shrill and vocal, they masquerade as "the majority" -- and the media (not to mention the Religious Right) just keep fanning those flames.
Of course, if you try to call out their misandry or their other forms of cognitive dissonance...you get written off (as "fragile" if you're male; as "self-loathing," if you're female), accused of crying "white [and/or] male tears," and are basically told to shut up. And people are afraid of challenging that toxicity, because they don't want to get branded as misogynistic or politically-incorrect.
