Matt, I agree with a lot of what you've said, here...although I'd counter with the important distinction that people who support White self-flagellation aren't necessarily representative of the Left (or even the Far Left) as a whole.

Yes, they're often amongst the noisiest, hateful, and most obnoxious voices...but we shouldn't allow them to dictate the entire narrative.
