My sister told me about one time when one of her ex-coworkers (an older woman, probably Boomer or Traditionalist in generational cohort) said a variation of this about my sister behind her back (to a mutual coworker who'd reported back to my sister). This woman apparently found it outrageous that my sister was unmarried while in her early-thirties, as this woman had gotten married around the age of 22.
For me, I'm able to avoid these questions most of the time because I'm antisocial and autistic (I've been wearing a face mask in public consistently for the last three years, for the very reason that -- even as Covid cases wane -- it helps me avoid insipid small talk with strangers). But I've been asked variations of "Do you have a girlfriend?" by complete strangers -- never mind how they apparently haven't considered the possibility that I'm gay (which I am).
