One major contributing factor that has shaped this dynamic is the anachronistic manner in which society has (and still continues to) teach/define "chivalry" in a monodirectional and heteronormative way.

We rarely hear how chivalry can transcend both sexual orientation and gender identity, and be platonic just as much (if not moreso) as it can be romantic.
