One problem, there, could be that members of Tribal Nations may make the objection that being of Mexican descent per se doesn't necessarily mean you have Indigenous heritage (unless one can trace their ancestry back to an Aztec [or adjacent] tribe).

The category should probably read as "Hispanic, Latino(a), and/or Chicano(a)"

But that does lead to another provocative question: why shouldn't the Census form allow Americans to identify multiracially, specifically by being allowed to check one or more box pertaining to a racial/ethnic identity?

The multi-checking option would reflect multiracial identities...for example, if a person has a blend of Moroccan, Persian, Indian, and Chinese heritage in their family, why should they be forced to make a rigid choice between either MENA or Desi or East Asian affiliation?
