Or, we can simply say "partner" or "spouse" or "lover" in a gender-neutral way, when referring to someone's significant other once we know how that somebody refers to their significant other in that manner. It doesn't require cisgender people to give up the references of "boyfriend," "girlfriend," "husband," or "wife."
