Revamping ‘Beauty and the Beast’ For The Current Millennium?

Could the 1987–90 cult sci-fi/romantic drama-actioner receive a makeover for a 21st Century sequel?

Being a 1980s kid, most of my childhood TV viewing was peppered with sitcoms. One of the few dramas I actually watched during my earliest grade school years was a cult classic known as Beauty and the Beast.

CAUTION: Spoilers ahead, if you haven’t viewed this television series in its entirety. Over the course of the past month, I’d DVRed vintage episodes of this series from the cable network Decades. The show’s enchanting ambiance felt perfect as Christmas approached!

Airing from 1987 through 1990 (the popular animated Disney movie of the same title would be released more than a year after its cancellation), Beauty and the Beast was a live-action romantic-drama containing sci-fi and fantasy overtones. It starred Linda Hamilton as Catherine Chandler, a New York City socialite; and Ron Perlman as Vincent, a man living underground who was born with mutated DNA making his skin and facial features reminiscent of a lion.

Catherine and Vincent fall in love after Vincent rescues Catherine from the aftermath of a near-fatal abduction and assault. Once she has recuperated, Catherine quits her cushy job at her…
