It's been my contention, for a long time now, that the U.S. Census forms should be modified to include both an APIDA (Asian, Pacific Island, Desi, & Arabic) category as well as a MENAPA (Middle Eastern, North African, Persian, & Arabic) category.
That way, the individual could more readily select which group they identity with, based on their lived racial/ethnic experiences. A majority of my own genetics are White European, so, obviously, I have no personal stake in either the status quo or proposed reforms one way or the other.
