I do wonder how the absence of Trump from the ballot itself will effect downticket races in future election cycles. Are we really going to see "Jane Timken displays" erected across the countryside of rural Ohio, next year? And why has Sherrod Brown historically done well enough in rural parts of Ohio (even if he didn't carry most of those counties) to still win statewide?

You're right that those issues aren't currently on the minds of many rural voters. That's why PUTTING THEM on people's minds would give Democrats a fighting chance in SOME "red" and "purple" districts.
