The difference is that nuclear weapons weren't widely profilerated across multiple countries in the 1930s and early-40s.
Some historians might argue that the United States had a moral duty to intervene and stop Hitler *BEFORE* the 1940s even began. The failure to intervene earlier may have ended up inviting the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor and the successive 4 years of global carnage.
