The ‘It Will Never Be Enough’ Fallacy

If it’s so impossible for any of us to bring about a better world — then why the hell are we even trying?

In the realm of social justice, we all know we’re grappling with enormous problems. These ills, especially when systemic in nature, have persisted for centuries. Not just in America…but all over the globe.

As we learn more about each other’s struggles, we gain greater awareness of how adversity plays differing roles in everyone’s lives. It helps us see the need for solving problems to which we, individually, may have previously been oblivious.

If we accept the premise that anyone of good character and rational mind wants to help improve the lives of strangers, that makes discourse over bigotry and discrimination all the more necessary.

Building those bridges of collaboration is what will ultimately turn the tide.

On the other hand, what won’t move the needle is the shoulder-sagging proclamation that I so often hear from illiberal voices who proceed to lecture everyone outside of their own echo chambers:

“No matter what you do, it will never be enough. Things will never change, to any significant degree, during my lifetime.”
