The main difference is that one of those two major parties is blatantly attempting to turn America into a one-party authoritarian state. They'll only succeed if we let them.

The other party hasn't accumulated enough net power to make such an attempt -- so that means such a hypothetical threat (from them) is on the backburner...for now.
