The problem is that ABC considers "The View" to be part of its news division (which is why they were allowed to continue producing new episodes all throughout the writers' and actors' strikes). They also used to brand themselves as "the most important political show in America." So they are contributing to a scourge of "infotainment" in the United States while trying to pass off their tripe as "journalism" -- blurring the lines between a journalistic broadcast and an opinion show.
I don't dispute that there have always been accounts of male Average Joes pushing back against the elitism of "beautiful" men. Take your example of muscular photography of the male body in the 1950s. But that doesn't change my point. Did anyone bother to *ASK* young boys whether they wanted muscles? Who decided that muscular and/or slender were the "ideal" body types for which young men should strive to emulate? And, as you've pointed out: How much of this narrative has been cloaked in heteronormativity?
