The problem with this, however, is that -- when the term isn't a blatant slur or invective -- how is one supposed to remember what the individual preference is of each person whom they've encountered within that marginalized group?

For example: If I prefer that people refer to my spouse as my "husband," but another gay man prefers that people refer to his spouse as his "partner" -- how is everyone supposed to recall his preferred references versus mine?
