They're not appreciating your context -- how you're pointing out that the Catholic Church has allowed and encouraged such power abuses to ravage people's lives. Pointing that out doesn't make you "anti-Catholic" by default. They are creating a false sense of victimhood for themselves.

If someone is using their religion as a crutch or pretense to demonize homosexuality -- then, yes, they absolutely need to be called out on their bigotry and how they're abusing our political systems.

But that's way different from claiming that people are delusional and have (allegedly) rejected facts solely because they openly practice theistic religions.

Just like we shouldn't allow right-wing zealots to keep tailoring our laws based on theocratic doctrine...neither should anyone be shamed or prohibited from expressing themselves, religiously, in public venues. That means we need to acknowledge how people may face obstacles in life due to their religious affiliations. And we shouldn't selectively condemn it in some cases while selectively encouraging/approving of it in other cases.
