This is disgusting political theatre from Pelosi. Rather than acknowledge the naked truth of the trajectory that the Republican Party has been on for decades, Pelosi is trying to act as though there's some Old School nexus that GOP offenders can conveniently claim to reenter with no impunity.

It's a false choice, though, to assume that the only two options are to welcome classical conservatives into a "bigger tent" or blindly character-assassinate anyone with an "R" after their name. The better option -- that is less spoken of -- is to transform the Democratic Party (or, at least, the culture bred from it) in a way that's responsive and effective. Here is my initial blueprint for doing so:

The question of what self-identified Republicans do, or where they should go, is secondary -- those decisions will be made by individuals once the problem-solving process is allowed to actually begin.
