This is very true. Time-shifting via DVRs didn't become "a thing" until the early-to-mid aughts.
If anything, perhaps there is truth to the idea that Millennials were the generation who made the MOST use of VCR technology (when it was still considered "cutting-edge") -- although Xers, being the original "Latchkey Kids," should probably be credited for accelerating and popularizing VCRs to the point where they'd become mainstream.
