WGN America used to air a scripted period piece called "Salem," which I believe ran for a few seasons. But I never saw it (although I want to!) while it was airing first-run episodes, so I can't comment on the breadth of creative liberties it may have taken.

But I definitely agree with you: I'd like to see a more mainstream cable/broadcast network create a serious-toned scripted TV drama set in Seventeenth Century Massachusetts Colony, investing us in relatable characters dragged into conflict as the witch trials began to tear society apart.
