What it comes down to is that we don't teach intersectionality in a relevant enough way. So when people hear the word "privilege," they automatically think of the ways in which oppression adversely affects their lives...not in terms of the ways in which they have unearned advantage.

Two things can be true at the same time. Intersectionality is a widely-spanning spectrum of juxtaposed privilege and oppression.
