What stands out to me about the Hemingrebels was how they were the first generation to truly be exposed to a global society at a magnitude comparable to our present-day conditions. For those who weren't professional journalists (the way "The Inner Circle" were), that must have been overwhelming. It truly made them feel "lost" amidst all of this new (to them) information.
