When I saw this episode, I actually felt that the conversation between Gemma and Grove was done pretty well. And, even upon rewatch, I still feel that way. There have been a lot worse exchanges on scripted television, lately, related to race relations ("Good Trouble," "Station 19," "Grownish," "Supergirl," and "The Goldbergs" all come to mind).

Upon further reflection, I do see your point -- and I'd concede that the writers probably should have tweaked Gemma's dialogue a little bit, to better reflect the realities linked to your counterpoint, Melissa.
